Chowan beats Bowie State 21-15 to stay perfect in CIAA

BOWIE, MD. – For the first time since the 2013 season, the Chowan Football team defeated Bowie State on the road after a 21-15 defensive battle in CIAA Northern Division action on Saturday.

With the win, Chowan sets up a pivotal contest next week against nationally ranked Virginia Union as both squads are undefeated in Northern Division action.

Rashad McKee tossed for 270 yards and three touchdowns through the air and picked up 56 yards on the ground.  Nijere Peoples led the rushing attack with nine carries for 97 yards.

Laurence King hauled in six receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.  Malik Tobiascaught two balls for 94 yards and a touchdown.  EJ Gatling recorded one touchdown reception.

Cameron Rampersaud led the Hawks with seven tackles.  Montre Moore collected 3.5 TFLs and six tackles.  Caleb Hester posted three pass break-ups and two blocked field goals.

The Chowan defense held Bowie State to 92 yards rushing as the Hawks outgained the Bulldogs 437-329.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter:

After several series of punts by both sides, Bowie State tried to take advantage of a short punt as the Bulldogs started at the Chowan 20.  The Chowan defense stood tall and forced a 32-yard field goal attempt.  The BSU kicker would miss wide right.

Chowan capitalized on the momentum as Rashad McKee found Laurence King for a 73-yard touchdown strike to go up 7-0 with 2:48 remaining in the opening stanza.

Bowie State would return the ensuing kick-off to midfield and found a long pass play to move into the redzone.  The Bulldog kicker would miss wide left on the 38-yard attempt.

Prior to the end of the quarter, Nijere Peoples ripped off a 48-yard run to move the Hawks to the BSU 31.

Second Quarter:

Chowan’s drive would stall inside the redzone as the Hawks failed to convert on fourth down.

Bowie State moved the ball down the field before having to punt.  The special teams for the Bulldogs recovered the muffed punt at the CU4.  The Bulldogs would punch it in from one-yard out on third down.  Caleb Hester would block the PAT to keep the Hawks in front, 7-6.

Shaun’dell Hawkins, Jakob Streeter, and Montre Moore recorded a sack on the next drive to force another punt.  The Hawks would move the ball from the CU 20 to just outside the redzone on a long drive.  Rashad McKee connected on pass plays to Jordaan Bailey, Laurence King, and Demetrius Moore before a false start and a pair of incompletions ended the drive late in the half.

Chowan would take a 7-6 lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter:

After a pair of punts by both sides, Chowan would turn the ball over near midfield allowing the Bulldogs the short field.  Chowan’s defense would force a long field goal attempt.  Bowie State would connect from 45-yards out to take a 9-7 advantage.

On the ensuing drive, Rashad McKee found Malik Tobias for 33 yards to move the ball to the edge of the redzone.  McKee connected with EJ Gatling for an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks back on top, 13-9, as the two-point conversion was unsuccessful.

Fourth Quarter:

Bowie State would regain the lead, 15-13, with 6:19 remaining in the contest as a long rush put the Bulldogs on the door-step of the endzone.  The defense would not go down without a fight as Bowie State scored on third down.  Caleb Hester would block another PAT.

After a pass interference call to start the drive, Rashad McKee found Malik Tobiasfor a 61-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks back on top.  Bowie State would be flagged for illegal participation on the two-point conversion allowing the Hawks another attempt.  The conversion was successful to put the Hawks up 21-15 with 5:59 remaining.

Both teams would punt on their next drives as Bowie State would get the ball at their own 13-yard line after Patric Talbot flipped the field on the punt with 1:43 remaining.

The Bulldogs, in an unfamiliar position against the Hawks, turned the tide on the first play with a 60-yard pass play as Simeon Burns stopped the long gainer from being a touchdown.  After a pair of short passes, Montre Moore stopped the Bulldogs on fourth-and-one for no gain to give the ball back to the offense to set up the victory formation.

UP NEXT

Chowan makes the important trip to Richmond, Va. to take on nationally ranked Virginia Union on October 29 in a contest that could decide the CIAA Northern Division.  Kick-off is slated for 1pm.
